The first flight of the UH-12 took place in 1948. Initially designed as a two-seat helicopter with a piston engine, it entered service in the late 1940s and went on to become a widely-used light helicopter for both military and civilian purposes throughout the late 20th century. The H-23 Raven served as a utility, observation, and MedEvac helicopter during the Korean War. It had various model numbers, including A through D, F, and G. The H-23A featured a sloping front windshield, while the H-23B was primarily used as a helicopter trainer. The Raven served as a scout helicopter during the early stages of the Vietnam War. It was later replaced by the Hughes OH-6A Cayuse in early 1968.
